July 23 and July 30, 2011
Corn Plant Development is in the R2 (Blister) stage which is normally 10-14 days after silking with some early planted corn just starting to hit R3 (Milk) stage.

In the last two week we have picked up over 400 Growing Degree Units (GDU’s) as well as varying amounts of rainfall. Much like earlier in the year with the moisture we have received we have also received high winds. These high winds have goosenecked some corn as well as caused some corn to greensnap. It appears that almost every field in our area has some level of goosenecking or greensnap in it.
With our humid temperatures in the last two weeks we have seen increasing levels of Eyespot and Rust in our area with some instances of Northern Corn Leaf Blight. The levels of eyespot are not as heavy as last year but are increasing. The stress of these diseases is compounded by the wind damage we have received this year, making a case for applying a fungicide on you corn if you haven’t already.
Soybean Plant Development is at R2 (Full Bloom) with some fields starting R3 (Beginning Pod). Soybean plants will continue to flower through R3 and up to R5 (Beginning Seed) which allows the plant to start filling pods when it is not under a lot of stress.
Soybean Aphid levels have increased and in some instances have hit levels that warrant spraying. We are also seeing some fields that have some defoliating type of insects such as lopers or flea beatles in them as well as aphids. As plants get closer to R5 –R6 defoliation causes yield loss, making the case that if you have aphids as well as lopers or flea beetles you should consider spraying.
