Agronomy Topic of the Week: Roundup Ready 2 Soybeans

When Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans were brought to market in 2010, there was
hesitation and doubt as to whether they would surpass the RR1 soybeans in yield. As we move
into the 2012 growing season, doubt continues to ease as yield data flows in and supports the
claim that RR2Y yield higher.
Monsanto reports a 3.8 bushel advantage over RR1 soybeans. The RR2Y varieties are developed
by inserting the RR2Y gene into areas of the soybean’s DNA that have been identified thru
extensive gene mapping to be regions identified with high yield potential. Farmers are seeing
more consistent 3, 4, and 5 bean pods per plant when compared to Roundup Ready soybeans.
More beans per pod and more beans per plant allows the grower to obtain higher yields. In
addition, RR2Y soybeans exhibit greater root biomass, more nodes on the main stem, and a
larger shoot biomass than RR1 soybeans. Supply of the RR2Y varieties should not be an issue for
2012, as it may have been in the past.
