Corn Plant Development is from V14 (14th visible collar) to R1 (silking). The average corn plant is at V16 and is 78 inches tall.

In the last week we have we have picked up 150-160 Growing Degree Units (GDU’s) 3-4 inches of rain and 3 leaves of growth. We did start to see some tassels in protected areas poking out mid week with some fields in full tassel by Saturday. The rain that we received during the week will help us pull through the hot weather that we are experiencing, anytime you receive rain right before tasseling it is a good thing.
Late in the week we had another round of wind come through our area and once again we encountered some goosenecking as well as some instances of greensnap. With all the wind we have had it looks as though we will not have a field in our area that does not have some plants with goosenecking or greensnap in it. With that being said we are still seeing differences between hybrids and genetics families, the hybrids you expect to see issues in you are.
With all the humid weather we are experiencing the levels of Eyespot and Corn Rust have increased dramatically. We are also starting to see some instances of Northern Corn Leaf Blight as well as Gray Leaf Spot. With the instance of disease as high as it is the application of a quality fungicide at R1 (Silking) is highly recommended.
Soybean plant development is at R2 stage (full flowering) and will have flowers up and down the plant with an open flower at the top one or two nodes of the plant. Plant height will vary by variety but on average most plants are 18-24 inches tall.
Much like corn we are seeing higher instances of leaf diseases in soybeans and again like corn with all the humid weather we are having the likelihood of a yield increase with an application of a quality fungicide at R2-R3 is high.
We are seeing some Soybean Aphid but the hot humid weather we are having seems to be keeping the levels from building as fast as they normally do. Aphids prefer temperatures 77°-86°F and will not completely development when temperatures are at or above 95°F. The probability of combining a herbicide and insecticide application is low, much like it is every year if you want good weed and aphid control.
